October 24, 2007- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch Countyâs (BGC) Elvera Mays Teen Center recently received the 2007 Georgia Area Council State Program Award for its âJust Press Pause:Â Abstinence Until Marriageâ program.
âThe BGC was competing against 140 other Club sites for this award, so this is definitely something to be proud of,â said Mike Jones, Executive Director for the BGC.
Two BGC staff members, Karen Hall and Forrest Robinson, began implementing the âJust Press Pause:Â Abstinence Until Marriageâ campaign in early August.

âThe purpose of this campaign is to encourage Bulloch County teens both inside and outside the Club to âpauseâ sexual activity until marriage and to raise awareness of the consequences of sexual activity outside of marriage,â said Robinson.
Over the past few months, Hall and Robinson have been working to increase public awareness about the campaign. Since early September, a billboard promoting the abstinence message has been on display on Hwy 67 near the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds. Several other billboards will be up by the end of this year. To reach teens on a more personal level, the BGC has partnered with Screen Vision to have abstinence advertisements featured on local movie screens. Hall and Robinson have also planned several abstinence-themed teen nights to give youth a positive way to spend their free time and to encourage them to continue making healthy choices. Even though the âJust Press Pauseâ campaign is geared heavily toward teens in Bulloch County, Hall and Robinson havenât forgotten about another important group of peopleâparents.
Hall and Robinson consider parents to be a vital resource when it comes to teaching teens about abstinence, so they have planned several parent workshops that will be held at the Club and various community locations throughout the school year.

In these workshops, parents will be equipped with the knowledge they need to encourage their children to practice an abstinent lifestyle.

The students played âNutritional Bingoâ with Club members, which was designed to get them thinking about healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The game was similar to regular bingo, but had one twistâinstead of using the traditional chips or cards as markers, the Club members were required to use their favorite fruits or vegetables.Prizes were awarded to those members who got âbingoâ first.Â
The students also provided low-fat yogurt for the kids to enjoy.Â
Special thanks to Laurel, Kendra, Ashley and Susanna for visiting the Club!

October 15- The Boys and Girls Clubsâ hockey season concluded after a month and a half of hard team work. There were twelve teams in total this season all with the same thing in mind--the Big Win!
âOver ¾ of the local Boys and Girls Clubs (BGC) children participated in this yearâs hockey season,â said Vernon Littles, Athletic Director for the BGC.
The 6 to 8 year old bracket had two teams playing this season. In the championship game the Kings beat the Thrashers 4-3. The Kings were sponsored by R&J Urban Works and the Thrashers by First Franklin Financial.
The 9-12 year olds had six teams participating this year. In their final game the Kings beat the Thunders 5-4. The Kings were sponsored by T&J Air Conditioning and the Thunders were sponsored by Viracon.
In the teen bracket, there were four teams battling each other for the championship. The Mighty Ducks soared their way to a win beating the Oilers 8-7, after an overtime and sudden death. The Mighty Ducks were sponsored by Viracon and the Oilers by Nevil Tire Services.
In every division, an award ceremony took place congratulating the children for their dedication and hockey triumph. Â Participatory awards were passed out as well. The season was even more successful with the help of Dr. Zwald and the students in his Principles of Coaching Classes, who served as volunteers, referees and coaches.
âIt was a great season and the kids played extremely hard. I would like to thank the players, parents, sponsors, classes, volunteers and Dr. Zwald,â Littles said.
