November 27, 2007-Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC) will have an extra gift to unwrap this holiday season thanks to the generosity of ERA Landmark Realty.

On Monday, Nov. 19, ERA donated approximately 60 wrapped shoe boxes to the Club. The boxes contained a variety of items, including toys, art supplies, candy and personal hygiene items. The boxes will be distributed to Club members in time for Christmas. Special thanks to ERA Landmark Realty for their support of the Boys & Girls Clubs!

November 19- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC) hosted its annual Thanksgiving dinner for Club members and their families on Thursday, Nov. 15

Approximately 170 people attended the event, which was held in the gymnasium of the Club’s Denmark Unit.

“The purpose of this event was to give Club members and their families an opportunity to spend time together,” said Karen Hall, Abstinence Program Director at the BGC.

Club member Akeem Ogelsby began the evening by welcoming everyone to the Club. Club member Elijah Cone followed by blessing the food, and dinner was served. RJ’s Seafood & Steaks restaurant catered the event, and menu items included turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans and rolls. Banana pudding and pound cake were provided for dessert. After dinner was served, Club members Briana Calles, Marvin Perkins and Demetrius Key gave a short speech on what Thanksgiving meant to them. At the conclusion of the evening, Gene Gardner, Denmark Unit Director, and Woody Pumphrey, Teen Center Unit Director, thanked everyone for attending.

November 15--“Is sugar-free jello healthy or unhealthy? What about margarine?” These were questions posed to fifth grade Club members by nursing students from Georgia Southern University (GSU) this past Tuesday. The students, along with GSU professor Dr. Debbie Allen, visited the Club to give members a lesson in healthy eating. The students began by presenting different food items to members and asking them if the item was healthy or unhealthy. The students also gave Club members a short tutorial on how to read nutrition labels. Club members were asked to identify several items featured on the labels, like serving size, calories, fat and vitamins.

The students also talked to members about the food pyramid and stressed the importance of eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products. Dr. Allen and her students also served the Club members apple sauce and apple juice to encourage them to choose healthy snacks. Special thanks to Dr. Allen and the students from the GSU Nursing Department for visiting the Club!

November 13, 2007-Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and the Statesboro Service League wanted to do something special for female members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County’s (BGC) Elvera Mays Teen Center.

Service League members visited the Club on Mon., Nov. 12, and served the teens a special Thanksgiving feast, which included turkey, macaroni and cheese and sweet tea. Service League members then shared things they were thankful for and asked the teens to do the same.

The Club members were thankful for a variety of things, including family, friends, health and education. Before leaving, Service League members provided the teens with a Thanksgiving-themed word search and awarded prizes to those teens who completed the search the fastest. Special thanks to the Statesboro Service League for visiting the Club and spending time with our members!

November 7, 2007-The Statesboro Service League recently hosted an honor roll party for Boys & Girls Clubs (BGC) members in grades 1-5 who made the A/B honor roll.

Service League members Anna Kay Hodgkiss and Barbara Brown provided cake, chips and drinks to Club members and encouraged them to continue making good grades. Before leaving, the Service League members handed out honor roll certificates and pencil holders filled with candy to members. Approximately 45 Club members made the A/B honor roll for the past 9 weeks.

The BGC offers several programs that allow Club members to improve their academic performance. One such program is Power Hour, a comprehensive homework help and tutoring program that is designed to raise the academic proficiency of Club members.

November 1, 2007-Several members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC) recently received a special gift for their participation in the Club’s hockey league. Roosevelt and Ja’nee Cone, owners of R&J Urban Works & Household Goods in Brooklet, donated Air Jordan basketball sneakers to all members of the Kings hockey team. The Kings were the champions in the 6-8 year old division of the Club’s hockey league and were sponsored by R&J Urban Works & Household Goods. Basketball season is currently underway at the Club and will last through February.
