January 17, 2008-If you need to satisfy your craving for chicken, come to Chick-fil-A on Thursday, Jan. 31, for “Spirit Night,” which will take place from 5-8 p.m.

A portion of the proceeds made during this time will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC). Individuals participating in “Spirit Night” will need to fill out a card so that the proceeds the BGC will receive can be properly calculated. Cards can either be picked up from Mike Backus at the BGC or filled out at Chick-fil-A on the night of the 31st. Individuals participating in “Spirit Night” will have a chance to win various prizes. BGC representatives will also be on hand to answer any questions the community has concerning the Club.

The BGC is located at 515 Denmark St. next to the Bulloch County Health Department. For more information concerning “Spirit Night,” please contact Mike Backus, BGC Resource Development Director, at (912) 515-4051.
January 16, 2008-Respect. Growth. Confidence. These are the outcomes John Robinson hopes to see result from the new teenage version of “Passport to Manhood,” which will soon be implemented at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County. (BGC).

“Passport to Manhood,” a program that promotes responsibility, reinforces positive behavior and develops character in male Club members, has been offered to members of the Club’s Denmark Unit for the past few years. Recently, however, the need arose for a similar program at the Club’s Teen Center, which serves members in grades 6-12. Robinson, along with several other Kappa Alpha Psi alumni, answered the Club’s call and agreed to be the mentors for the new program. Robinson visited male members of the BGC’s Teen Center on Monday, Jan. 14, to give them a preview of the upcoming program. According to Robinson, Club members will practice their public speaking skills, hear various guest speakers and have one-on-one time with the mentors. Robinson also stressed the importance of staying focused and getting an education.

“Education is like permanent wealth,” he said.
Robinson grew up in Mississippi and attended college at Texas Southern University and Jackson State University.

January 15, 2008-Members of the Statesboro Service League discussed personal hygiene with female members of the Club’s Teen Center on Monday, January 14.

Service League members began their visit by talking about puberty and the changes that come with it. Service League members then divided the teens into groups of four and asked them to write down answers to various questions concerning cleanliness. The teens were then required to share their answers with the other groups. Club members stressed the importance of keeping your hair and skin clean, wearing clean clothes and brushing your teeth.

Before leaving, Service League members provided cookies and drinks for the teens to enjoy. Approximately 25 teen girls participated in the activity.

Special thanks to the Statesboro Service League for spending time with our members!
