February 26, 2008-Beginning on Monday, Feb. 25, the whirring of sewing machines could be heard at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County’s (BGC) Elvera Mays Teen Center.
Over the next few months, several community volunteers will be teaching Club members how to sew everything from pants to quilts.
“Sewing is something I’ve always loved to do, and I wanted to share that with the kids,” said volunteer Susie Smith.

The sewing classes will be offered every Monday and Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and will last until mid-May. After learning the basics of how a sewing machine works, Club members will have the opportunity to create bags, shorts, jackets and jewelry.
“Sewing is definitely something you can have a future in,” said Smith.
“When the classes are over, I hope the Club members will continue sewing and eventually be able to open their own business.”

February 12, 2008-Members of the Statesboro Service League visited female members of the Club’s Teen Center on Monday, Feb. 11, to talk to the teens about the importance of maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle. Service League members began their visit by giving each Club member a laminated pink or red heart that featured various heart-healthy tips.
Service League member Cindi Hart, who is also a registered nurse, then explained that the heart is a muscle and needs to be
exercised. She also discussed the benefits of eating healthy foods and told the girls that heart disease is the number one killer of women in this country.

February 8, 2008-What is the proper way to set the table? What topics should be discussed at the dinner table? Over the past few weeks, members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County’s (BGC) Portal Unit have been learning the answers to these etiquette questions.Ryan Christian, Unit Director for the Club’s Portal Unit, started an etiquette class in early January to teach Club members the basics of proper dinner etiquette.

According to Christian, various aspects of dinner etiquette were covered, including the proper eating utensils for each course, appropriate dinner talk and proper dress.“I really enjoyed the etiquette class,” commented Club member Hector Diaz. “I’m glad I know the right way to eat and the right way to act in a restaurant.”
Maria Torres, Diaz’s mother, was also pleased that her son participated in the program. She said that ever since her son began the class, he has been setting the table for dinner at home.
At the end of the three-week course, Christian and Portal staff member Sherrich Thegg took 10 members from the Club’s Portal Unit to the Beaver House Restaurant to test thestudents’ skills.
Club members sat at their own table and enjoyed a meal of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, rice, vegetables and homemade biscuits.
“The Club members enjoyed their visit to the Beaver House, and they all incorporated what they learned during the etiquette course,” said Christian.
