May 20, 2008-The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC) held its 2008 Passport to Manhood Graduation Ceremony on Friday, May 16.

Parents, BGC board members, and various community members attended the event, which was held in the gymnasium of the Club’s Denmark Unit. The ceremony began with a graduate processional into the gymnasium.
Afterward, Club member Akeem Ogelsby led the pledge, and Club member Terrell Childs read the mission of the Passport to Manhood Program, which is to teach and promote responsibility, reinforce positive behavior and develop character in male Club members who are in fifth grade.
Club members then took turns telling audience members what the Passport to Manhood program meant to them. “Passport to Manhood means being honest and working as a team,” said Club member Terrell Childs.

After the Club members made their remarks, several BGC staff members took turns talking about the Passport program and encouraging the graduates in their future endeavors.

“You are our today, our tomorrow, our future,” said BGC staff member Wayne Jackson.

The Passport graduates then shared a slide show presentation that featured various field trips the members participated in during the school year.

BGC staff members Roosevelt Cone and Wayne Jackson then presented each Passport graduate with a trophy for their participation in the program.

Afterward, Cone and Jackson presented the Iron Man Award to Club member Eric Cordero for his outstanding display of dependability, reliability, commitment and character. The program concluded with a graduate recessional out of the gymnasium. Refreshments were also provided for Club members and guests to enjoy.

May 16, 2008-On Thursday, May 15, Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC) members in grades k-2nd performed in a spring recital entitled “Heroes and Holidays.” Mrs. Bobby Altmiller, who began volunteering with the Club in June 2007, organized the performance. Parents, BGC board members, and various community members attended the recital, which was held in the gymnasium of the Club’s Denmark Unit.
Club members began the performance by waving flags and singing songs to honor George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr.and Abraham Lincoln. The members then sang songs about various holidays, including Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day. The performance then turned to songs about the season, and Club members waved pinwheels and sang “Hooray for May.” Club members ended the performance by singing the Mary Poppin’s favorite “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and the “BGC Theme Song.” After the performance, Mrs. Bobby provided an array of refreshments for Club members and guests to enjoy.

May 15, 2008-Weldon T. Watts, Boys & Girls Clubs (BGC) member and Statesboro High School (SHS) senior, was recently named the winner of the Kathy Brunson Memorial Scholarship.
Kathy’s daughter Page presented Watts with the scholarship during SHS’s Senior Honor’s Night, which was held in Georgia Southern University’s (GSU) Russell Union ballroom.

Watts, who recently received the BGC’s Youth of the Year Award, plans to attend Georgia Military College in the fall and pursue at degree in art. He has been a member of the BGC for the past six years, where he was a member of the Keystone and Torch Clubs and participated in various Club athletics.
Watts was also active in the BGC’s abstinence education program, and in May 2007, was selected to participate in a trip to Washington, D.C., to speak to Congressional leaders about the importance of abstinence education to the youth of America. At SHS, Watts participated in basketball, JROTC and his passion—football. This $1,000 scholarship is named in honor of the late Kathy Brunson and is awarded every year to a SHS senior who is also an active member of the BGC.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the recipient must be planning to enroll in an accredited two-year or four- year post-secondary institution, demonstrate financial need, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and remain in good standing with the academic and disciplinary requirements of SHS. The scholarship applicants are reviewed by a selection committee that consists of members appointed by the donor’s family and representatives from the BGC.
May 14, 2008-On Friday, May 9, members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC), along with instructors from the Statesboro School of Dance, performed a “Student Demonstration” at the Averitt Center for the Arts.
Club members in grades k-5 performed a variety of bar and floor exercises for the parents and community members who were in attendance. The demonstration was a culmination of what Club members learned during their “Faith in Motion” dance classes.
In mid-February, Mrs. Shay Morgan, Director for the Statesboro School of Dance, along with several of her dance students, began visiting the Club to teach members the art of ballet. According to Morgan, she has wanted to do a community service project for the past several years, but, until recently, wasn’t sure what that project should be.
“I felt lead to the Boys & Girls Clubs,” she said.At the end of Friday night’s performance, all 23 Club members received a single long-stemmed red rose and were treated to refreshments. The Boys & Girls Clubs extends a special thank-you to the Statesboro School of Dance for their support of the Club.

May 2, 2008- Music filled the air at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC) on Thursday, May 1.

Mrs. Bobby Altmiller, who began volunteering with the Club in June 2007, organized a “Piano Party” for 2nd grade Club members to perform for their family members.

Club parents, as well as board members and various members from the community, began arriving at the Club’s Denmark Unit shortly after 5 p.m.

The Piano Party began at 5:30 p.m. Club members kicked off the performance by waving flags and singing various patriotic songs to honor one of the member’s fathers who had recently returned from Iraq.

Afterward, each child took a turn introducing himself or herself to the audience and playing a song on the piano. Song selections performed by the students included “Mary had a Little Lamb,” “Rain, Rain Go Away,” and “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”

At the end of the performances, Mrs. Bobby presented each child with a medal to congratulate them on all their hard work and dedication. Mrs. Bobby also provided an array of refreshments for Club members and guests to enjoy.

May 1-The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bulloch County (BGC) hosted its First Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, April 29, at RJ’s Seafood & Steaks Restaurant.

Approximately 35 people attended the event, which was sponsored by Loxcreen.The evening began with a welcome from Tammy Horton, Director of Volunteer Services at the BGC. BGC Board President Patrick Hopkins blessed the food, and all guests proceeded to the buffet line. As everyone was eating, Horton recognized all Club staff and board members present, and Hopkins thanked all the volunteers for the difference they make in the lives of Club youth.

Afterward, BGC Executive Director Mike Jones treated guests to a video presentation featuring various photographs of volunteers interacting with Club members.Horton then read a proclamation by President Bush that declared the week of April 27-May 3 as National Volunteer Week.

“The BGC would not be able to survive without its volunteers,” she said. “I hope you all leave tonight knowing how important you are to our organization.”

Horton then proceeded to give out certificates of appreciation to all volunteers in attendance.  Volunteer groups that were represented included the FanParents, an organization providing parental assistance, encouragement and involvement for Club members, the Statesboro Service League, Georgia Southern University’s (GSU) Honors Program and GSU’s Department of Nutrition and Food Science.

Other volunteer groups that could not be present included GSU’s Sport Management Department, Statesboro School of Dance, which is directed by Mrs. Shay Morgan, Bulloch County Health Department, various alumni of the fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi and various GSU faculty and community members.

After all the certificates had been given out, Horton presented the BGC’s Volunteer of the Year Award to 77-year-old volunteer Mrs. Bobby Altmiller. Altmiller began volunteering with the Club in June 2007 and visits the Club on a weekly basis to play the piano and sing with the children. To date, she has organized several musical performances for members of the Club’s Denmark Unit, including a Christmas pageant and a performance during National Boys & Girls Club Week.  She is currently planning a spring performance, dubbed “Heroes and Holidays,” which will take place at the BGC on Thursday, May 15.
